New Green Deal
GOAL: By 2050, the EU wants to become a climate-neutral continent. Achieving the goal involves actions in all sectors of the economy, such as: investments in environmentally friendly technologies; supporting industrial innovation; introducing cleaner, cheaper and healthier forms of private and public transport; decarbonisation of the energy sector; ensuring greater energy efficiency of buildings; working with international partners to improve global environmental standards. The taxonomy is responsible for stimulating investment directions so that, in accordance with the European Green Deal, Europe will achieve climate neutrality of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
In addition to the environmental dimension and impact on the climate, the energy transformation also has an economic dimension.
And so we can ask ourselves: what can this mean for our economy, and therefore for the inhabitants of Poland?
Polish residents paid over PLN 1.16 trillion for fuel imports in the first 20 years of the 21st century (2000-2020), including:
for oil – PLN 802.9 billion,
for coal – PLN 72.2 billion,
for natural gas – PLN 285.7 billion.
At the same time, coal imports grew the fastest, by as much as 750% - from a small volume of 1.5 million tons in 2000 to 12.9 million tons of coal in 2020
The years 2021 and 2022, due to, among others, for pandemics and the war in Ukraine are absolutely record-breaking when it comes to spending on fossil fuels, where in these two years we paid an amount of PLN 265 billion for import costs.
Fuel expenses can be compared to budget revenues, which amounted to PLN 136 billion. in 2000, PLN 250 billion. in 2010 or PLN 420 billion. in 2020, comparing these amounts with the cost of PLN 1,425 billion spent on fossil fuels over the last 22 years.
In the case of Poland, the energy transformation may therefore have both a climatic dimension, ensuring that our environment is passed on to future generations in a condition no worse, or perhaps even better than the one it received, as well as an economic dimension, significantly reducing our dependence on fuel imports and relieving future generations from bearing these costs.
This perspective includes the activities of Green-en as an entity providing investments in the area of energy transformation that will enable obtaining energy in various forms such as biomethane, biogas, hydrogen, electricity, energy recovery from locally available sources such as substrates for biogas plants, renewable energy, or forms of energy recovery or saving.
Growth prospects
The development of the biomethane and hydrogen economy is gaining significant pace. The rapid increase in the number of projects on a global scale and the leading role of Europe also translate into the possibility of using Poland's potential (3rd hydrogen consumer in Europe, 4th largest biogas generation potential in Europe, 6th largest renewable energy potential in the EU). Leading Polish companies as well as political elites recognize the potential of biomethane and hydrogen, which is reflected in the ambitious strategies of individual companies, as well as the implemented regulations and state strategies.
The geopolitical situation related to Russia has definitely strengthened the position of the policy of climate neutrality and the pace of moving away from fossil fuels, which is reflected, among others, in reflected in the EC REPower EU Communication and the declaration of 35 billion m3 of biomethane by 2030.
Financial expenditure on the hydrogen and biomethane economy is supported by specific regulatory mechanisms and financial support instruments, which are important for the energy transformation.
Market leaders in the energy and oil & gas sectors have and are implementing ambitious decarbonization strategies, including for hydrogen and biomethane projects. Also in Poland, both market leaders and smaller companies announce their plans for hydrogen and biomethane.
The first hydrogen projects demonstrating technological effectiveness have been implemented. In Europe, hundreds of projects of various scales are being prepared and implemented, the total value of which is estimated in billions of EUR.
The next years will be crucial in terms of the market's selection of technologies and products, as well as the contractors of projects in the field of both hydrogen and biomethane.
Selecting and securing an appropriate location is the basis for ensuring development opportunities and investment opportunities in the energy transformation. Green-en is an entity that supports its clients in implementing such a strategy in Poland.
